Ironbark Fully Adjustable Spokeshave – A Revolution in Design
First advance in a Spokeshave in decades. The Ironbark spokeshave takes inspiration from the best of historical bevel up wooden bodied spokeshaves while innovating with modern design, premium materials, and precision craftsmanship to create a unique and unrivaled woodworking experience.
The spokeshave consists of a main brass body with two stainless steel blade depth adjuster screws, wooden handles, and the two brass-knobbed spindles at the end of the handles. When the brass knobs are tightened, the blade is locked into the dovetail. The blade can be removed from the tool by loosening both brass knobs, pressing the blade towards the body, then sliding it out the front towards the mouth. When reinstalling the blade, the stainless screws will stop the blade at the same depth adjustment as before. To adjust for the optimal cut, gently loosen the brass knobs so that the blade is only lightly held, then back off the stainless grub screws. When taking a practice cut, the blade will slide back into the stainless adjustment screws. Slowly advance the stainless screws while taking practice cuts until the desired shaving is achieved, then tighten the brass knobs.
The spokeshave blade is flat with no tangs or features to interfere with sharpening. It is bevel down and held at an extremely low angle of 35 degrees. This setup is unusual in modern spokeshaves and allows for a lot of adjustability in shaving thickness and a very easy paring action on end grain. When sharpening, it is important not to exceed a bevel angle of 35 degrees. Since the blade bevel also serves as the ‘heel’ of the spokeshave’s sole, the slight relief angle between the brass ‘toe’ and the blade bevel allows for the shaving to be manipulated by wrist positioning. By tilting the spokeshave forward to ride on the brass toe, the blade is lifted slightly out of the cut and will take a thinner shaving. By bearing down and allowing the tool to relax back onto the blade bevel, the spokeshave will take a heavier shaving.
Features:
Solid brass body holds the M2 HSS Blade over a wide 45mm mouth.
Flat Spokeshave has a 19mm diameter body with a flat 9.3 (3/8″) alignment sole.
Round Spokeshave has a 16mm diameter body with 10-degree angled handles.
Flat Spokeshave available as a kit for you to make your own wooden handles.
Two brass knobs at the end of each handle adjust and tighten the blade allowing for tilted or skewed blade setting. Two stainless steel knobs adjust the depth of cut.
Blade removal and resetting is designed to be quick so that sharpening and set-up takes less time.
